There is a sense among many Europeans, not just in the Netherlands, that they have been abandoned in a fast-changing world, that multi-national corporations are more powerful than nation-states, that the urban rich and highly educated do fine and ordinary folks in the provinces languish, while democratically elected politicians are not only powerless, but have abjectly surrendered to these larger forces that threaten the common man.

Is the Commission aware that in 1995 the Dutch company Vos B.V. of Alphen aan den Rijn (part of Helm AG of Hamburg) supplied glycerine contaminated with diethylene glycol (antifreeze) to Pharval in Haiti, which used it as an ingredient in Afebril, a paracetamol-based antifebrile syrup, as a result of which, in 1996, at least 60 children died of kidney dysfunction, and that legal proceedings in the Netherlands relating to this case have been concluded by fining the company without any trial taking place?

La Commission sait-elle qu'en 1995, l'entreprise néerlandaise Vos B.V., filiale de la société hambourgeoise Helm AG située à Alphen aan den Rijn, a livré à la société haïtienne Pharval de la glycérine additionnée de diéthylèneglycol (antigel), que cette firme haïtienne a ensuite utilisé ladite glycérine dans la fabrication d'Afebril, solution au paracétamol, qu'en 1996, ce sirop contre la fièvre a provoqué des troubles rénaux à la base du décès d'au moins soixante enfants et que la justice néerlandaise a imposé, sans autre forme de procès, une amende à la société Vos B.V.?
