It is suggested therefore that the “cortical type of hypertensive vascular disease” seen in “atypical” Alzheimer's disease is due to the extraordinary amount of amyloid degeneration of the meningeo-cortical vessels characteristic of these observations and is not caused by hypertension. “Atypical” Alzheimer's disease may therefore be considered a special “vascular” type of presenile dementia.
