दक्षिण के मंदिरों की प्रमुख विशेषताओं में , उनके सीढीदार छोटे बडे विमानों , उनमें लगे धरीय तथा परिधीय मंडपों - जिनकी छत समतल होती है , और ऊंचे गोपुर प्रवेश द्वारों को लिया जा सकता है , जबकि उत्तर के मंदिर प्रासाद जैसे महलनुमा होते हैं , उनके ऊपरी भाग गोलाई लिये होते हैं शिखर पर उत्तुंग आमलक होता है .
