इस रिश्ते के बारे में १८वीं सदी का लेखक जोसॆफ ऎडिशन लिखता है: “दो व्यक्ति सारी दुनिया को छोड़कर इसी मकसद से एक बंधन में बंधते हैं ताकि वे बुरे वक्त में एक-दूसरे का हौसला बढ़ाएँ और अच्छे वक्त में आपस में खुशियाँ बाँटें। इस तरह वे यही ज़ाहिर करते हैं कि चाहे एक-दूसरे की कमियाँ हों या खूबियाँ, वे अपनी आखिरी साँस तक एक-दूसरे का साथ निभाते हुए आपस में हमेशा हँसते-हँसाते रहेंगे, इज़्ज़त देंगे, समझदारी दिखाएँगे, माफ करने को तैयार रहेंगे और धीरज से काम लेंगे और खुश रहेंगे।”
