C’est grâce à la protection de cette boisson par une appellation d’origine ainsi qu’aux producteurs de tequila à 100% d’agave – même si l’adjonction de 49% de sucres d’une autre provenance est autorisée en vertu de la norme officielle mexicaine – que ce type de tequila a pu s’imposer sur le marché national et le marché international en tant que produit de première qualité et de grande pureté. De plus, d’autres types de tequila, adaptés au goût du consommateur, ont fait leur apparition : il s’agit des tequilas blanches, "reposado" et "añejo" dont la douceur a séduit une clientèle féminine, autre segment important du marché.
