1. Another priority is to heighten public awareness and to sensitise the population to the manifold and complex manifestations of these evils.

La prise de conscience du public et la sensibilisation de la population aux manifestations multiples et complexes de ces maux constituent une autre priorité.

2. And while there are evils ... , there is a great amount of good, of virtue, of self-abnegation [or self-denial], and a great desire to do the will of God and carry out His purposes.

Et bien qu’il y ait le mal... il y a beaucoup de bonté, de vertu, d’abnégation et un grand désir de faire la volonté de Dieu et d’accomplir ses desseins.

3. In a certain ideological mind-set , Israel is perceived not as a political entity, susceptible to prevailing standards of judgment, but as an almost allegorical force, the symbolic center and source of the globe’s evils and ailments.

Une certaine mentalité idéologique perçoit Israël non comme une entité politique, sensible aux normes de jugements les plus répandus, mais comme une force presque allégorique, centre symbolique et origine de tous les maux et problèmes de la terre.

4. Once more Anchises bids us cross the main / and seek Ortygia, and the god constrain / by prayer to pardon and advise, what end / of evils to expect? what woes remain? / What fate hereafter shall our steps attend? / What rest for toil-worn men, and whitherward to wend?

5. Would that all men would judge of the tree by its fruit, and would acknowledge the seed and origin of the evils which press upon us, and of the dangers that are impending! We have to deal with a deceitful and crafty enemy, who, gratifying the ears of people and of princes, has ensnared them by smooth speeches and by adulation.

Aussi voyons-nous multiplier et mettre à la portée de tous les hommes ce qui peut flatter leurs passions.

6. In total contradiction to that guarantee, we have encouraged the dismantling of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia; we have urged the "friendly' federated republics to align themselves individually with the European Union; we have begun the accession process with Slovenia, thereby rewarding its leaders for their self-aggrandizing conduct; we have raised all those who crafted the partition of Yugoslavia to the rank of allies of the European Union and "democrats' , sometimes in defiance of the evidence; we have multiplied sanctions, blockades and embargo procedures and military threats against the Srpska Republic, which stands accused of all the evils committed during the events taking place in that region.

En totale contradiction avec cette garantie, on a encouragé le démembrement de la République fédérale de Yougoslavie; on a invité les républiques fédérées «amies» à se rapprocher individuellement de l'Union européenne; on a engagé le processus d'adhésion de la Slovénie, et récompensé ainsi l'égoïsme de ses dirigeants; on a élevé tous les artisans de la partition de la Yougoslavie au rang d'alliés de l'Union européenne et de «démocrates», quelquefois contre l'évidence; on a multiplié les sanctions, les procédures de blocus et d'embargo, les menaces militaires contre la république de Serbie, accusée de tous les maux dans les événements de la région.

7. We recognize and affirm that, at the outset of the third millennium, a global fight against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, and all their abhorrent and evolving forms and manifestations is a matter of priority for the international community, and that this Conference offers a unique and historic opportunity for assessing and identifying all dimensions of those devastating evils of humanity with a view to their total elimination through, inter alia, the initiation of innovative and holistic approaches and the strengthening and enhancement of practical and effective measures at the national, regional and international levels; (Adopted by the WG of the 3rd PrepCom)

Nous reconnaissons et affirmons qu’à l’aube du troisième millénaire, la communauté internationale doit assigner un rang de priorité élevé à la lutte mondiale contre le racisme, la discrimination raciale, la xénophobie et l’intolérance qui y est associée, ainsi qu’à toutes les formes et manifestations odieuses et changeantes qu’ils revêtent, et que la présente Conférence offre une occasion sans précédent et qui fera date d’analyser et d’identifier toutes les dimensions de ces fléaux qui frappent l’humanité en vue de les éliminer définitivement en faisant appel, notamment, à des méthodes novatrices et intégrées et en renforçant et en dynamisant les mesures pratiques et concrètes aux niveaux national, régional et international; (adopté par le Groupe de travail – troisième session)
