Gegenstand der vorliegenden Erfindung ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von 2,3,5- Trimethylbenzochinon oder einer Mischung enthaltend 2,3,5-Trimethylbenzochinon umfassend den folgenden Schritt: Oxidation von 2,3,6-Trimethylphenol mit Sauerstoff oder einem sauerstoffhaltigen Gas in einem zwei- oder mehrphasigen Reaktionsmedium in Gegenwart eines Katalysators oder Katalysatorsystems mindestens enthaltend ein Kupfer(ll)-halogenid zu einer Mischung enthaltend 2,3,5-Trimethylbenzochinon, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Reaktionsmedium Wasser und mindestens einen sekundären aliphatischen azyklischen Alkohol mit 6 oder mehr, vorzugsweise 7 oder mehr, Kohlenstoffatomen enthält.
