1. Descent into the catacombs through an entranceway at the surface leads one into a maze of narrow corridors that have been dug out of the porous rock and that may spread out over many acres and cross at so many different angles that a person unacquainted with them would easily become lost.

Über die Treppe, die von dem an der Erdoberfläche liegenden Eingang zu den Katakomben hinabführt, kommt man zu einem Labyrinth von schmalen, in das poröse Gestein gehauenen Gängen, die sich kilometerweit ausdehnen und sich an so vielen verschiedenen Stellen überschneiden, daß sich jemand, der sich nicht auskennt, leicht verirrt.
