The alkaline, nutrient-rich waters and large aquatic grass beds that partially border the slow-flowing parts of the fluvial section of the St. Lawrence result in an abundance of several species of gregarious fish, including yellow perch Perca flavescens and pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus, a large component of the Great Blue Heron’s diet in this sector of the St. Lawrence River (DesGranges 1981 and unpubl. data).
