1. Gypsum (CaSO 4 ·2H 2O) and Anhydrite (CaSO4) are valuable in reclaiming alkaline soils for agriculture by converting sodium carbonate to sodium sulfate and calcium carbonate. These minerals occur widely and abundantly in almost all basins that contain marine evaporites and in some that contain nonmarine evaporites.
