For animals exposed to the same concentration of the zirconia-based and high-purity, kaolin-based RCFs, the increase in pulmonary tumours was also significant (7.4% incidence of pulmonary tumours: 4 adenomas and 5 carcinomas; 3 mesotheliomas for the zirconia-based fibre; 15.7%: 10 adenomas and 9 carcinomas; 2 mesotheliomas for the high-purity, kaolin-based fibre).
