1. Polyene Antifungals such as amphotericin B act by binding to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane

2. Cholesterol, present in nongerminated conidia of F. moniliforme, had a greater affinity for D4E1 than did ergosterol.

3. This could be an additional mechanism supporting the classic antifungal effect of this agent, the inhibition of ergosterol synthesis.

4. Antifungals can be grouped into three classes based on their site of action: azoles, which inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol (the main fungal sterol); polyenes, which interact with fungal membrane sterols physicochemically; and 5-fluorocytosine, which inhibits macromolecular synthesis.
