1. Then in about the 1930s, with the advent of plate glass, rolled steel and mass production, we were able to make floor-to-ceiling windows and unobstructed views, and with that came the irreversible reliance on mechanical air conditioning to cool our solar-heated spaces.

1930년대쯤, 유리판과 압연강이 등장하고 대량 생산이 되면서 우리는 바닥에서 천장까지 닿는 창을 만들 수 있게 되고, 따라서 좋은 전망을 가진 건물을 짓게되었죠. 그 결과 우리는 태양빛에 달궈진 열을 식히기 위해서 기계적인 에어컨을 가동하게 되었습니다. 에어컨에 돌이킬 수 없을 정도로 의존하게 되었다는 겁니다.
