2. Hipparchus of Nicaea (second century), outstanding astronomer and founder of trigonometry, classified stars into magnitudes according to brightness, a system basically still in use.

니케아의 히파르코스(2세기)는 뛰어난 천문학자이자 삼각법의 창시자로서, 별을 밝기에 따라 여러 등급으로 분류하였다. 이런 방식은 기본적으로 지금도 사용된다.

3. Al-Battānī (ninth-tenth century), astronomer and mathematician; improved Ptolemy’s astronomical calculations, thus determining with greater accuracy such things as the length of the year and of the seasons.

알바타니(9-10세기). 천문학자이자 수학자. 프톨레마이오스의 천문학 역법을 개선하여 한 해의 길이와 계절의 길이 같은 것을 더 정확하게 산정함.
