2. And yet the world is nothing but a tempestuous sea; time is naught but a bridge thrown over the abyss connecting the negation that preceded existence with the eternity that is to follow it.

अतएव प्राणिप्लवक केवल समुद्र की ऊपरी सतह में ही सीमित नहीं होते, बल्कि गहरे तल में भी पाए जाते हैं; किंतु पादप्लवक सूर्य की रोशनी पर निर्भर रहते हैं, अत: वे केवल सूर्य की रोशनी प्राप्त होनेवाली गहराई तक ही पाए जाते हैं और शेष समुद्र तल पर वर्षा की बूदों की भाँति निरंतर समुद्री तल पर गिरते रहते हैं।
