हम पृथ्वी के सापेक्ष इनकी गतियों को देखते हैं जो स्वयं सूर्य की परिक्रमा कर रहा है, इस कारण जब दोनों विपरीत दिशा में होते हैं तो ये तीव्र गति से भागते दिखाई देते हैं तथा सूर्य के एक ही ओर होने पर पृथ्वी आगे निकल जाती है, जिससे सितारों के सापेक्ष में पूर्व की ओर जाते हुए भी पश्चिम में जाते दिखाई देते हैं।
