1. One of the purposes of the United Nations as elaborated in Article 1 (1) of the Charter was to "bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of the peace.”

जैसा कि उक्त चार्टर के अनुच्छेद 1 (1) में कहा गया है, संयुक्त राष्ट्र के अनेक उद्देश्यों में से एक है ''शांतिपूर्ण तरीके से और न्याय तथा अंतर्राष्ट्रीय कानून के सिद्धांतों के अनुरूप ऐसे अंतर्राष्ट्रीय विवादों अथवा परिस्थितियों का समायोजन अथवा समाधान करना जिनसे शांति भंग होने की संभावना है।’’
