The British were taken aback by the surprise attack so much that they even left the radio station Penang in running condition , which was used by Mohan Singh and the great Sikh leader Piara Singh to explain to the Indian community how selfish the British were in managing their own escape , leaving the Indian population at the mercy of the Japanese .
