4. These small shallow wetlands often have a history of hydrosere succession from open water to fen, swamp, or peat bog or, when conditions permit, there may be a further succession of colonizing plants from shrubs (dogwood, alder) to water-tolerant trees (birch, spruce, ash, cedar, elm).

Ces petits marécages peu profonds sont souvent l'objet d'une hydrosérie allant de l'eau libre au fen en passant par le marais ou la tourbière ou, lorsque les conditions sont propices, il peut y avoir une autre succession d'espèces colonisatrices allant d'arbustes (cornouiller, aulne) aux arbres tolérants à l'eau (bouleau, épinette, frêne, cèdre, orme).

To determine whether local site differences corresponded to any morphological or chemical differentiation in Picea mariana, 10 cone-bearing trees were sampled from each of three semiadjacent stands near the Matawin River, Thunder Bay District, Ont.: (i) an upland forest on well-drained alluvial soil, (ii) an abandoned pasture on heavy soil, and (iii) a wet sphagnum bog.

Dans le but de voir si les différences locales entre sites correspondent à une différenciation morphologique ou chimique chez Picea mariana, nous avons échantillonné 10 arbres fructifiés dans chacun de trois peuplements semi-adjacents près de la rivière Matawin, dans le District de Thunder Bay en Ontario : (i) une forêt de hautes terres sur un sol alluvial bien drainé, (ii) un pâturage abandonné sur sol lourd et (iii) une tourbière humide à sphaignes.
