1. Whether it begins as acute joint rheumatism, continuing spasmodically or progressing slowly (the so-called secondary chronic joint rheumatism of the clinic), or whether it commences and proceeds gradually, it is impossible to arrest the pathological process before the synovial membrane is scarred and before serious cartilage-bone changes have taken place.

Mögen sie als akuter Gelenkrheumatismus beginnen und dann in Schüben oder allmählich fortschreiten — der sog. sekundär-chronische Gelenkrheumatismus der Klinik —, oder mögen sie von vornherein schleichend verlaufen, der pathologische Prozeß ist unaufhaltsam progredient und endet erst mit dem Narbenstadium der Synovialis und oft sehr schweren Knorpel-Knochenveränderungen.
