Bisher wurde das Vinylchloridmonomer nur als mögliche Ursache eines in der Regel reparablen Krankheitsbildes, der sogenannten berufsbedingten Akroosteolyse anerkannt, während neuere epidemiologische Untersuchungen und auf Tierversuchen beruhende Erkenntnisse zeigen, daß ein "Vinylchloridmonomer-Syndrom" entstehen kann, wenn Arbeitnehmer längere Zeit und/oder wiederholt hohen Vinylchlorid-Luftkonzentrationen ausgesetzt werden. Dieses Syndrom besteht nicht nur aus der "berufsbedingten Akroosteolyse", sondern auch aus einer Hauterkrankung wie der Sklerodermie und Leberfunktionsstörungen.
