1. First, it set out to find the roots of modernisation, starting from the conquest of hinterlands to the access to global markets, looking at the economies, infrastructure, and territorial and urban hierarchies.

Beginnend bei der Erschließung der Hinterländer bis hin zum Zugang zu den Weltmärkten, wurde zunächst versucht, durch Betrachtung der Ökonomien, Infrastruktur sowie regionaler und urbaner Hierarchien, die Ursprünge der Modernisierung festzustellen.
