I fear that the sole objective in retaining the French Constitution's compulsory consultation of the people on any new European accession is to let citizens and citizens alone take responsibility for 45 years of political and diplomatic cowardice not attributable to Turkey itself, but only to their governments.

Ich fürchte, dass die Beibehaltung der in der französischen Verfassung vorgeschriebenen Volksbefragung zu jedem neuen EU-Beitritt einzig und allein dem Ziel dient, den Bürgern die alleinige Verantwortung für 45 Jahre politischer und diplomatischer Feigheit aufzubürden, die nicht der Türkei selbst, sondern allein ihren Regierungen zuzuschreiben ist.
