1. In 1969, I received an assignment to Canberra, the capital of Australia.

2. On 18 January 2003 , parts of Canberra were engulfed by a bushfire that killed four people and destroyed 491 homes and the major research telescopes and workshop at the Australian National University 's Mount Stromlo Observatory .

In Canberra befinden sich das Parlamentsgebäude, der Hohe Gerichtshof und zahlreiche Regierungsbehörden. Die Stadt ist auch Sitz eines katholischen Erzbischof s und eines anglikanischen Bischof s sowie einiger sozialer, wissenschaftlicher und kultureller Institutionen mit nationaler Ausstrahlung.
