1. Large studies carried out in Canada and the Netherlands and in Switzerland and Austria have shown that both fulminant and fatal embolism and major anticoagulant haemorrhage are very rare under outpatient and ambulant conditions.

2. Homocysteine and antiphospholipid antibodies (APL Ab) appear to be particularly suitable for use in corresponding studies, as these would mean that with vitamin supplementation and/or specific anticoagulant regimens targeted medicamentous treatment options are available.
