( 1304–74 ) , Italian poet; Italian name Francesco Petrarca . His reputation is chiefly based on the Canzoniere ( circa 1351–53), a sonnet sequence in praise of a woman he calls Laura. He was also an important figure in the rediscovery of Greek and Latin literature.
